Home Level 2 chargers at three price points

Charging at home is what gets you the home rate: about $88 a month for this car at 35 miles a day, against about $144 if every mile came from public fast chargers. A wall outlet can cover a short commute; a Level 2 charger refills a full day of driving overnight. These three cover the common choices, based on published specs and owner reviews.

  • Grizzl-E Classic

    about $300

    40 A, 9.6 kW, NEMA 14-50 plug-in, 24 ft cable

The lowest-cost way to get full Level 2 speed. No app or Wi-Fi, so scheduling is done in the car.

  • Autel MaxiCharger 40A

    about $470

    40 A, 9.6 kW, NEMA 14-50 plug-in, app scheduling, 25 ft cable

App scheduling lets you charge only in off-peak hours, which is where time-of-use savings come from.

  • Emporia Pro 48A

    about $599

48 A, 11.5 kW hardwired, app scheduling, load management (PowerSmart)

Load management can let it share a full panel, which may avoid a $1,000 to $3,000 panel upgrade.

How We Calculate EV Charging Costs

This calculator multiplies your vehicle's EPA-rated efficiency (kWh per 100 miles) by your daily mileage to determine energy consumption, then applies your state's residential electricity rate from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Whatever share you charge at public DC fast chargers is priced at $0.54 per kWh, the US average paid at public fast chargers excluding free sessions (Paren, Q3 2026). EPA efficiency is measured from the wall plug, so charging losses are already inside the kWh figure; we do not add them twice.

Where the Data Comes From

Vehicle efficiency ratings come from the EPA's FuelEconomy.gov database, which tests every EV sold in the U.S. under standardized conditions. Electricity rates are EIA state-level residential averages updated annually. Real-world efficiency varies by 10-20% from EPA ratings depending on driving conditions, temperature, and speed.

Tips for Accuracy

  • Check your actual electricity rate on your utility bill. It may differ from the state average, especially if you have a time-of-use plan.
  • Public fast charging prices vary by network, location and membership plan. Check the price your network's app shows before you plug in, and set the public share slider to how often you use it.
  • Cold weather raises energy use per mile, so winter costs run higher; the Winter Range calculator shows how much range your car loses at your temperature.
  • Most EV owners charge to 80% daily, not 100%. A full charge estimate assumes you occasionally need maximum range.
FAQ

Frequently asked

At the national average electricity rate of 18.19¢/kWh, charging a typical EV with a 60 kWh battery from empty to full costs about $10.91. Most daily charging sessions cost $2–5 depending on how far you drive, since most people only charge 20–40% of the battery each night.
